Fourth Graders Build Catapults

Fourth graders in Patty Nicholson's class at Henry Leavenworth Elementary have been reading The Gadget War, which is about a girl who invents gadgets to solve problems. One of her gadgets is a food fight catapult. For their Fun Friday activity recently, the members of Mrs. Nicholson's class had the opportunity to build catapults of their own and test whose gadget could launch a bag the farthest. Henry Students Learn From Professor Cranium

Students at Henry Leavenworth Elementary had a visit from Professor Cranium (also known as Henry counselor, Cindy Scircle) to introduce them to the parts of the brain and their functions to begin their "Train Your Brain" lessons. Professor Cranium discussed the pre-frontal cortex (wise brain), Hippocampus (memory saver) and amygdala (security guard-fight or flight). This is the beginning of a year-long process of learning how to use these parts of the brain to ensure students' best attitudes, behaviors, and academic performance.

Henry Families Enjoy Family Fun Night

Students at Henry Leavenworth Elementary were treated to an evening of fun, food, and family as the school hosted its annual Title I Information and Family Fun Night. Families were invited to enjoy food, prepared by the Child Nutrition Department, as well as a number of activities coordinated by staff members, including face painting and bounce houses. A special thank you to the Henry Leavenworth PTO for providing ice cream!

Fifth Graders Test Themselves in "Breakout" Lesson

Escape rooms have become a popular trend where visitors are locked into a room with a team and have to find clues hidden throughout the space to help them escape before time is up. This week, Southwest Plains Coach Sonya Pena introduced a similar concept to fifth grade students at Henry Leavenworth Elementary. Students were grouped into teams and had to work together to figure out the codes for four locks on their team's box in hopes of revealing the surprise inside before time was up. Clues were written in invisible ink on signs posted throughout the classroom. Students had to use black lights to reveal answers and put the answers together to figure out the combinations to open the locks.

Mrs. Nicholson Honored at KSDE Teacher of the Year Event

On Sunday, September 11, district finalists were recognized during a ceremony in Topeka for the KSDE Region 2 2017 Kansas Teacher of the Year award. This year, 103 educators across the state were nominated for the distinction honoring teaching excellence in elementary and secondary classrooms. USD 453’s elementary teacher of the year, Patty Nicholson – Henry Leavenworth, and secondary teacher of the year, Emily Reed – Richard Warren Middle School, were in attendance and joined by friends and family for the recognition luncheon.

Henry Students Welcome Grandparents for Lunch

In celebration of Grandparents Day, which takes place Sunday, September 11, students at Henry Leavenworth Elementary were invited to bring their grandparents as guests for a special lunch on Friday, September 9. Students enjoyed getting to spend some extra time with their loved ones and showing them around their school.

Henry Fifth Graders Create Tools to Manage Stress

As a part of a school-wide initiative to teach students to cope with stress, students in Caitlan Johnston's fifth grade class discussed different ways to manage stress. One of the ideas that came from the discussion was the use of stress balls. Students made their own stress balls from balloons and flour that they will use throughout the year in times of stress or anxiousness.

Henry Teachers Welcome Students with Book Mobile

At the start of the school year, teachers at Henry Leavenworth Elementary boarded a school bus and traveled through surrounding neighborhoods to greet students and welcome them back for the school year. Teachers were greeted with many smiling faces as students were able to learn who their teachers were for the new year. Teachers also distributed new books to all the students they met along the way.
